Joseph Goeb

Agricultural Economist

Region: Global

Joseph Goeb is a PhD agricultural economist with deep expertise in agrifood system transformation, market and household resilience, and evidence-based policy engagement in fragile and developing contexts. With 10 years of experience living and working in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, he has co-led multi-million-dollar research and policy initiatives addressing critical challenges in food security, conflict-affected value chains, climate shocks, and rural livelihoods. Dr. Goeb is widely recognized for designing and implementing high-quality empirical research—including randomized controlled trials and value chain studies—that directly inform policy decisions, program design, and donor investment strategies. He has published extensively in leading development and agricultural economics journals, including Food Policy, World Development, JAERE, Agricultural Economics, and Journal of Agricultural Economics.

An advocate for local institutional capacity, Dr. Goeb has worked closely with national research organizations and policy think tanks to co-produce high-impact knowledge products. His work with local partners has resulted in more than 40 policy notes and research briefs—downloaded over 24,000 times—aimed at bridging the gap between research and action. He serves as a trusted advisor to local research teams, building analytical and communication skills while jointly delivering rigorous evidence to government ministries, donor agencies, and the private sector. He also plays a leading role in research and advisory activities related to the resilience of agricultural value chains under conditions of conflict, emergent threat and disruption, and climate variability.
