Dr Carrie Ngongo

Epidemiologist

Region: Africa, Asia, Global

Carrie is an epidemiologist proficient in analyzing observational data to understand the potential drivers of health outcomes. Her research interests include the cultural and socioeconomic factors influencing nutrition in diverse populations, the impact of antenatal nutrition on mothers and babies, perceptions of maternal healthcare quality, and the dual burden of malnutrition. In Malaysia Carrie helped to design a community-driven program to reduce obesogenic environments among low-income, urban populations. She subsequently collaborated with the Malaysian Ministry of Health to analyze the national diabetes registry, identifying diabetes subtypes and associated complications. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Senegal Carrie has led research to identify associations between extreme temperature, precipitation, and routinely reported population health outcomes, furthering an understanding of how the climate crisis affects health. Carrie is passionate about transforming complex technical content into a compelling, accessible story. Her communications approach is grounded in over 20 years of managing public health projects, with a decade based in Africa. Carrie has worked for RTI International, Evidence Action, Grameen Foundation, EngenderHealth, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She holds a PhD in Health Sciences from Ghent University and a Master’s of Health Science in International Health Systems from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Carrie is a strong advocate for evidence-based interventions and policies and is eager to apply her expertise in collaborative research to improve health and wellbeing, particularly among the most vulnerable.
